About a month or so ago, I wrote an article looking at the uncanny success of the Florida Panthers in the shootout. This year, the Panthers are converting on over 50% of their chances, and most of this success has come from the performance of Brandon Pirri (who was recently traded to the Anaheim Ducks).
On that article, a reader posted a comment, wondering if the size of a goaltender had any impact on save percentage in the shootout. With that in mind, I pulled the numbers of every goalie who faced at least 14 shootout attempts since 2005 (14 attempts because of this article by Eric Tulsky), and ran a basic correlation between goalie height (in inches) and shootout save percentage.
There is virtually no relationship between goalie height and shootout save percentage. The shootouts are just weird, and our best answer for them really does seem to be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
